The Support Staffordshire Volunteer Star Awards 2021 combined event took place on Thursday 10th June for Tamworth and Lichfield districts, as broadcast and recorded here on YouTube:

It was a wonderful celebration of community spirit, creativity, love and care and I am thrilled to tell you that our very own former Places of Welcome Team Leader - Helen Titterton & Tamworth Places of Welcome were runners up (Commended) in the Volunteer Team of the Year award category for their area!

Simon Peaple (Heart of Tamworth) was named Volunteer of the Year, and our Place of Welcome co-ordinator at St Anne's, Chasetown: Sheila Murphy was also Commended in the Lifetime Achievement award category for Lichfield District. Congratulations!

I am sure you will know many of the other individuals and organisations that were named at this fabulous celebration, too. They may well be working alongside your own Places of Welcome or otherwise benefitting those who attend your groups. Some may even be amongst our own volunteers - so many of you wear such a lot of different hats, I know - we're so proud to know you all and so grateful for all that you do.

Also, Burton on Trent co-ordinators and volunteers will be especially pleased to hear that Gulsoom Aslam has also been nominated for an award, for her work with Transforming Communities Together, supporting Places of Welcome.

We caught up with Gulsoom recently to see how she was feeling about the ceremony:

Last year I had the pleasure of volunteering with the team at Transforming Communities together on the Places of Welcome Initiative..

It was such an honour to help to create spaces for people to connect and belong. After the past year this has now become especially important and I’m just really pleased to be part of that legacy.

I learned so much and met many wonderful people.

The work itself was so rewarding but I was really chuffed to hear that I had been shortlisted as a Finalist for a Volunteer Star Award. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to serve my community and the award would be the icing on the cake

Her awards evening is Thursday, 17th June at 7.30pm. If you'd like to cheer her on, you can watch on YouTube at Support Staffordshire Volunteer Star Awards 2021 – Stafford & District and East Staffordshire - YouTube.

Good luck, Gulsoom!
