Bringing People Together BLOG

Bringing People Together (BPT) is a network designed to ‘connect people to others from the comfort of their own home’. Inspired and influenced by learning from Places of Welcome, BPT uses telephone and online platforms to enable people to connect safely with others in their neighbourhood and form lasting friendships. The aim is for BPT to become a network of local groups, offering a safe place for friendships, laughter and encouragement, all from the comfort and safety of your own home!

This week, on Monday evening, I had the pleasure of joining one of the BPT groups hosted by SNJ Charitable Trust - SNJ Chat & Chai - and what a way to start my week! I had a delightful hour of light-hearted chat with a group of lovely people. Jenny, who hosted the group – made everyone feel very welcome and included – no one was missed out. The first half of the zoom call started with a round-up of everyone’s week, which meant that very quickly I got to know the people in the group, a little about who they are, what they do, what interests them and also what had been their highs and lows of the week. Then for the second half of the hour long chat, Jenny asked the question “What is your favourite time of day and why?” I was quite surprised by the responses – as a lot of the group were certainly early risers or ‘morning people’. Jenny then rounded up the call with words of personal encouragement for everyone – which I thought was a really lovely touch. Although I was a newcomer to the group – I didn’t feel like an outsider – and it was evident that the people in the group had formed genuine friendships and cared for each other, and I believe that anyone that joined this group overtime would form those bonds too.

And it’s not only women that get to have all the fun. SNJ have also started a men’s group. These sessions will be led by a practicing doctor and will be in English, Hindi, Punjabi & Urdu in a safe, confidential environment! If anyone cannot get on zoom, SNJ also provide training to bridge the digital divide so that everyone is able to take part.
